What is this place?

You have crossed into a realm within the literary landscape, located beyond the frontiers of science fiction, philosophy, futurism, and horror. It is a dimension composed of stories spanning the far future and the ancient past, from the intricate view of inner consciousness to the infinite void of outer space. These tales can at one moment elicit comical wonder, while at the next incite cosmic terror. Welcome to… Time Zone Weird.

This Substack contains short fiction written by T.Z. Barry, author of the sci-fi mystery novella Work for Idle Hands, the YA horror novel Trick or Zombie Treat, and the short story collections Story Addict and Death by Self-Driving Car. His non-fiction writing about various topics can be found at tzbarry.com/blog.

Time Zone Weird is a place for me to publish quick short fiction more regularly while I work on longer more time-consuming projects, including novels, novellas, and three themed short story collections: one about artificial intelligence, another about the simulation theory, and a third composed of horror.

To begin, the majority of Time Zone Weird content will be an ongoing sci-fi satire series called “Future Fake News” (FFN), a dispatch of short news reports from possible and impossible futures, some humorous, others horrific, all squarely located in the Time Zone of Weird.

Another recurring series of posts, inspired by Jorge Luis Borges, are “Hyperstitional Films,” or reviews of movies that do not exist (yet). Hyperstition refers to a concept created by philosopher Nick Land and the CCRU of “effective culture that makes itself real, through fictional quantities functioning as time-travelling potentials.” Any producers, directors, or AI-film-generators are free to turn my hyperstitional movies into reality.

For now, most FFN posts will be free and available to all subscribers, but some longer stories and other bonus content may be behind the paywall.
